I just read the whole complaint.  Interesting, but not enough detail there
to call it.  If the smartec chip is a carbon copy, they're probably sunk. 
If a clean roomed clone, then they'd probably get away with it.

The ramifications of this sort of attack on mechanical device compatibility
are staggering.  Imagine if the auto makers started to employ this to force
people to buy genuine Ford/GM, etc repair parts for cars...   "Sorry
dude, you gotta get this car fixed only at
the dealer..."
