MH>I am interested in getting a brooder and was wondering if there is any
MH>particluar brand or model that you would recommend.
I use the hospital infant incubators. The price is often less than some of
the brooders I see advertised. They will run for a year with no problems
(assuming that they have been serviced), the temp cycles about 1 degree,
there are portholes so the teeny tiny babies can be fed inside and they
don't get cold, there is filtered forced air and the humidity can be set
from about 50% (perfect for 2 week old babies) to about 65-80% (perfect for
neonates or hatching eggs. The place I get mine is Trace Medical Supplies
and their 800 number is 323-3786, ask for Don. They are a little more work
to disinfect but the plusses out number the disadvantages. If there is
someone you can go in with, the price is 4 for $1000. You can get 1 for
$400-$500. The shipping charge will kill you so picking the unit up at
Lisle, IL is really the only option.
I think the Intensive Care brooder is quite nice. I know of those who have
gotten the Thief of Hearts and the Boardwalk brooders and like them. I
believe Rick Jordan uses the Thief of Hearts brooders. In any case, I would
get one that offers humidity. I would pick up a couple of thermometers that
are ASTM. I would never trust only one thermometer.
MH>I have recently acquired my first pair of amazons a couple months ago.
What species? I have a pair of Yellow Crowns - my pet male decided he would
rather be a father than mommy's companion so I acquired an "older" female
for him. I thought sure she would lay this year but no dice. He was trying
to kill me for several months when I serviced the cage but nada.... oh well,
there's always next year.
