Whatever you get just make sure it has "FLASHable" rom capability for later 
ease of installing updates and/or desirable new features.
At the same time, if you can wait, I would for as long as possible, there's 
simply too much going on now with modems. While any decent modem supports 
33.6, anything above that as you may have noticed just isn't settled as I see 
it so it would be risky to decide whose std. to follow, but USR's has usually 
provided workable solutions.
FYI - I have a SupraFAXmodem288(now 33.6) and has provided decent service. It 
now getting dated, but for the most part it still chugs along. good luck
