subject: what do you believe in?

-> Taking the 'mystery' out of what all depresses a lot of folks.

WC> Plenty of mysteries yet to solve but we're getting rather close.

Sure! That's exactly what they're afraid of. :) Getting close. And yet
even when we DO stumble upon something big (most discoveries are made
by 'accident' (that is without expecting it)- we'll still need a lot
of time to figure it out and then there will always be new questions
to seek answers to. A door opened leads to another door. Religion
init's attempt to slam the doors only causes the curious amongst us
us to want to open them all the more! :). BUT do we need that kind of
impetus to advance? I don't think so. It's necessity that's the mother
of invention- not deliberate attempts to stop it. (Yet okay sometimes
those deliberate attempts provides the necessity.)

WC> The string theory unified all the forces, weak, strong, nuclear
WC> and gravity and that's never been done before.
WC> Even Einstein died pursuing that holy grail without success.

I've a hunch and I got this from Hawkings (or was it Dawkins) that
the reason we do not have a clear understanding on that which confuses
most of us is we don't have sufficient knowledge about it, so we are
left to do as humans have always done: we speculate.

Curious people seek out more knowledge based on those speculations
(for want of anything else to go on). Our speculations may be wrong
but the searching is what turns up those unexpected discoveries
showing HOW our speculations are in error so we able self correct and
forge onward for even MORE information because discoveries always create
new questions. Learning is a never ending journey.

BUt theists and especially religious leaders whose very income depends
on theism hate this! They just wanna toss: 'goddunit' and forget about it.

And they use false science and errors pre self correction-
to support their willful ignorance.
...........................

WC> The *great* thing about string theory which can also be called TOE
WC> for Theory Of Everything is that it withstands the tests of
 WC> mathematical proof.

(Squinch). I have a hunch the reason we can't figure things out is
due to THIS method. How do scientists know they're not going about
what they do in some wrong sort of way? I mean if they did it the way
that works we'd not still be so confused alredy? :) Why does it have
to be MATH?????? :P :) Heck it might be musical notes (sound) or
something. Oh wait math can be used to "Explain" everything but is it
the ONLY way? And is it the RIGHT way?

Take Evolution for example. Perhaps Darwin was on the right track but
he didn't know about DNA. I read enough of "The Selfish Gene" to
realize the right track may not be fossils at all. For not all living
thins leave fossil impressions? And not all things that die have died
where they'd be able to leave such an impression? And how do we know
dug up bones are a true representation of a a species and not say a
malformed individual? I know some dug up bones have been found to
have suffered arthritis so that would effect appearance..etc.

One question that nags at any thinking person is which came first the
egg or the chicken.

I mean if there was a first mammal for example what fed it breast
milk? We don't KNOW how the 'firsts' got started but that doesn't give
reason to toss it all to a goddunnit either. Not for the sincerely
curious amongst us. I'd say the reason we don't see 'in between's is
because there was no way for their existence to have been recorded in
anyway for us to know. A soap bubble is here one second an gone the next.

As for humans descending from apes. I never did buy that. Perhaps
cousins with a common ancestor? Or maybe apes and humans are just
a similar variation of billions of variations of DNA that happened to work
and survive. I'm thinking from the GENETIC pov rather tan the
erroneous 'finished product' pov which is what creationists like to
play with against the Fact of Evolution..

There are theists who believe their (man made) god DID create us all
but used Evolution as the method rather than the quicky magic want
stuff Fundies like to imagine cuz it's easier for their small minds to
digest. I said 'man made' because the honest theist will admit we
really don't know what god is. We can only speculate (and use what we
think god is as we see fit!)

...............

WC> That is the values arrived at in the proposed theory match those
WC> pluged into the equation on the originating side.

 Yeah. (Ouch ouch ouch)

WC> Mathematical proofs are one area where "proof" is accepted
WC> because each such proof in subjust to the most intensive of scrutinies
WC> by mathematicians of the world.

I'll take a shot of the other proof for now! :)

WC> Problem is there are several string theorist all different that proove
 WC> out.

 Ow ow ow!! Stop that!

WC> I think the real one is hiding in the numerically valid ones.
 WC> Time will tell.

yes it is.. or somewhere else where we LEAST expect it. Right under
our noses all along!!! :) We just didn't think to look there.

Hey don't all the BEST of best QUest game makers do that? You have a
mystery to solve (object to find). You have to solve a bunch of puzzles
to get there though. clues are always hidden where we are least apt too
look and the solutions are usually far simpler than we thought! :)

This could be the same way the mystery of the Universe works. It's simpler
than we want to make it out to be which is why we can't figure it out
yet... The SIMPLEST 'answer however' can't be right either because
it's not a an answer at all: it's another question setting us back to
square one. "Goddunit" simply has you STILl wanting to know HOW.
