How did you find it?  FWIW, I've heard things about such stuff as 
non-printing characters that appeared to be a space,  and used qedit to "go 
over" all of what I thought were spaces in menus.ctl,  though I didn't try 
that anywhere else.

Yep,  and taking that line and moving it up to the top of that list fixed the 
problem.  Weird!
