DD>I'M GIVING
DD>THEM VITA SEED FROM SUNSHINE BIRD SUPPLY AND EVERY TWO TO THREE DAYS
DD>I SPRINKLE A BIT OF NEKTON CALCIUM POWDER.
I feed my AG breeders a pellet based varied diet. With a couple of the pairs
it took me 2 1/2 years to get them off of seeds except as a treat several
times a week. It can really make a difference in the breeders' health as
well as help the eggs and the babies that they feed. A beans/grains mix,
birdie bread and a variety of fresh fruits and veggies topped off with
Wheatgrass powder along with the pellets provide a healthy varied diet.
Seeds are a dangerous base for breeders who are expected to maintain
themselves and reproduce on such a diet. I use a maintenance diet until the
breeders lay and feed babies. When they produce, I change to the breeder
formulation.
Do you supplement with the calcium because the breeders' blood calcium level
is low? Excessive calcium supplements with Vitamin D can be very dangerous
because Vitamin D can be toxic. I give my breeders calcium twice a week -
half the recommended doseage. When they start laying, I give calcium daily
(half the recommended doseage) on the soft foods from the time the first egg
is layed until a week after the last is layed.
DD>I HAVE A WHITE SHEET OVER T
DD>SINCE I NOTICED THAT THEY'RE VERY SHY. I'VE PRETTY MUH COVERED EVERYTH
DD>ANYONE HAS ANY ADVIVE OF THINGS THAT I SHOULD OR SHOULN'T DO
DD>PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LET ME KNOW.
Please remove the sheet from over the cage. It is very important that
breeders (all birds really) be exposed to full spectrum lighting. The one
most often recommended is the Vita-Lite - either power twist or straight.
Are the AGs in a separate room? If so, they will be out of the nestbox when
you leave the room. I have 3 males that peek out of the nestbox hole to keep
track of me as I service the birdroom. Another thing you could do that would
make them more comfortable is to knock on the door before you enter. If they
know they have time to enter the box before you come into their room, they
will be less likely to injure themselves trying to hide.
What kind of a nestbox do you have?
I love all my birds but those AGs have a special place in my heart.
