I agree with Paul that motivation is important. What is more important
to a teenager than learning to drive? If they want to drive (which many
could do without know all the "rules" of the road) they must study and
pass a written and then a driving test. Life is much like learning to
drive. The driving is the goal. Along the way there are some less-
liked information that must be learned in order to drive. I have earned
my Master of Education degree. I am not necessarily a better teacher
because of it. I am not necessarily a better teacher because of my BS
degree either. However I am a better teacher because I have taught now
for 7 years and every year I get more seasoned.
But, without the education I could not have my teaching job. The
degrees don't mean Im a good teacher, just qualified (certified). But
along the way I must have learned a great deal about life, discipline,
writing skills, interpersonal skills, and developed an educational
philosophy. I think my educational experiences, much like my life
experiences, have made me a more "well-rounded" person. There is far
more value to an education than a mere certificate.
