| subject: | what do you believe in? |
-> 0n (14 Aug 05) WAYNE CHIRNSIDE wrote to CINDY HAGLUND... -> -> -> I believe in the spirit called human. -> -> J > The human spirit. So you are A DESIST? -> -> Nope. The human spirit is HUMAN. It's prolly "just" a chemical function in -> -> the brain but that bothers some people. -> WC> I find that chemical process in all it's wondrous complexity -> WC> far more appealing than "God dunnit." -> Me too. But for most folks it seems, well 'goddunit' is easier to -> accept. That way they don't haveta be 'cursed' as it were with "evil" -> curiosity! :) -> Taking the 'mystery' out of whatall depresses a lot of folks. Plenty of mysteries yet to solve but we're getting rather close. The string theory unified all the forces, weak, strong, nuclear and gravity and that's never been done before. Even Einstein died pursuing that holy grail without success. The *great* thing about string theory which can also be called TOE for Theory Of Everything is that it withstands the tests of mathematical proof. That is the values arrived at in the proposed theory match those pluged into the equation on the originating side. Mathematical proofs are one area where "proof" is accepted because each such proof in subjust to the most intensive of scrutinies by mathematicians of the world. Problem is there are several string theorys all different that proove out. I think the real one is hiding in the numerically valid ones. Time will tell. -> And -> solving mysteries sucks the living breath as it were, out of religion. -> On religious folk don't mind a little bit sucked out breath but they -> fear it just the same. They're smug with the fact every time we solve -> one mystery a new one appears of which they can smugly claim 'god -> dunnit! as an acceptable answer even though they were wrong the first -> fifty something times. -> Granted there are THEISTS not belonging to any particular man made -> organization USING theism to gain power and wealth- who believe in a -> god but don't assume they KNOW what that god is all about ; they -> regard the 'god' as most of us do- the weather... -> WC> Even though a bit dated the late Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" -> WC> series makes for fascinating biewing IMO. -> He was a brilliant man yes. :) And yet he had the good grace as to -> not try to offend the delicate sensitivities of the god dunnit crowd. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 123/140 500 106/2000 633/267 |
