Hello World,
I got to go play at Software Development 97 this week, which was
said to be the largest conference of its kind ever. I will try and tell
you a bit of the highlights. I felt it was dominated by Internet products
(big surprise) and especially JAVA. It seemed to me that you might call
Visual Cafe the Hit of the Show. There was Java, Java, Java everywhere,
but not a drop to drink.
Microsoft was featuring the new Visual J++ version 1.1 , Windows CE
and suprisingly Visual Test 5.0. Sun was showing Java WorkShop 2.0 betas,
the Java 1.1 API and announced the Java Studio, to create Web pages with
JavaBeans content, is in development. Powersoft featured Power J and
Watcom announced the upcoming Jato, Java development system. Borland had
a very large booth by the entrance (Expensive). It was almost all C++
Builder, not a word on Interbase or ReportSmith (for the 2nd & 3rd show
in a row). CA and Oracle (nor the NC's) were no where to be found at all.
Both The Cobb Group and Pinnacle Publishing were also conspicuously
absent (for about 4 shows now). AMD announced that they started shipping
their new K6 CPU chips in volume this week, at up to 233 Mhz !!!
                                                      Hope you enjoy,
                                                      den
