XUL is just a user interface builder, kind of a glorified word processor
where the document is a webpage and contains some UI functionality. It's
closer to what I'm describing but not quite.
I'll give you an example of something we have today that's closer. Take
your XUL web app, I can run IPv4 or I can swap out IPv4 and replace it with
IPv6 and your web app doesn't even know the difference. Ok now extend that,
instead of IPv6 I swap it out for a USB2 module, or a GHLTS module (Geo's
Highspeed Lightwave Transit System) or whatever. Pretend the whole
communications level is completely modularized and maybe I could even use
com ports or something really old.
Now take that to the application level, you and I have photoshop and an
image filter called polarize/unpolarize. I replace the file load module
with one that reads text files and I can now use photoshop as an
encryption/decryption application by polarizing/unpolarizing documents
before sending them to you. Or maybe we go a bit further and stick the
polarize/unpolarize filter right on the GHLTS module to encrypt and decrypt
all traffic between our machines.
Geo.
