Personally, I think you are wrong here.

I believe that the number of people at the extremes are small.

I think most people are more in-between, running the range of "I kinda like the
guy" to "he's a boor, but I like cheap gas, cheap food and no wars."

That's what shifted things for this election.  The in-between people left their
idological safe-spaces when Bidenomics started messing with their lives.
