Scott Dudley elucidated in a message to Jim Brown:

Hi Scott and Jim!
Long time no talk Scott.... I am running NT server v4.0 here with two nodes
on there own PCs (Dos Client) and multi-line chat works just fine here. I
have no idea what may be causing Jim's problem as I have never seen this
happen. I have the IPC directory on a partition on the NT server in the Max
directory (note all the nodes load Max from this drive).
I may be a Windows NT WorkStation problem....
Jim, if I can help you compare copnfigs I would be glad to work something
t.

                             Barry
