DG>True.  I've changed the command keys a bit and have custom menus, trying

DG>menu has the "reading" choices.  The line that says
DG>" reads next->" is a conditional display, and in the
DG>event they're reading in the other direction shows "
DG>reads prior<-".  And yes, I do sometimes see people press
DG>"#" attempting to read a msg.
That is a much more elegant solution. Very nice.
