The polio and smallpox vaxes were effective enough that they pretty much
stamped out the diseases in question (well, until people quit taking them,
and until we started letting these diseases back into the country again).

OTOH, other vaxes are not quite that effective but do the job for most
people.

IMHO, the COVID vax has not reached that latter rung yet.  If you travel
somewhere that has a different strain going around, for example, you are
not likely protected.
