Hmmm ... compared the *curses* files on my Debian system to those on the SuSE 
8.0 system, and found that "libncurses.a" was not symlinked to
"libcurses.a" 
in the /usr/lib/ directory. Created the symlink and Maximus compiles fine. 
Now I wonder why? ....
