GW> Pain, fortunately I didn't come across that...
Fortunately neither did I in practice!
GW> What I did hear of was the LOP switching transistor that caused one
GW> manufacturers TV sets to go up in smoke. The developers used one
GW> manufacturer, the factory purchasing got a better(?) deal from another
GW> company. Unfortunately the secondary characteristics were not the
GW> same, and not good enough, so Poof!, the set went up in smoke...
GW> We approved both the device _and_ the suppliers. Puchasing could
GW> not use an unapproved supplier...
I remember a similar thing where the production spread of some
switching FETs threw us out.
We were using several hundred in a project where they were
switched by TTL logic. The data sheet showed a cutoff voltage
spread between 2 and 5 volts, but the first lot we bought had
them all switching right at the top of that range.
We had to purchase several THOUSAND and hand select the ones that
would work.
Fortunately the local supplier agreed to take back the ones that
didn't meet our needs, but he sold them all back to us when we
wanted some more....
