I have found out what was making gcc better than PDPCLIB, and
have modified PDPCLIB. Here is the latest results (using an
unreleased version of PDPCLIB)...
small freads on binary files
----------------------------
bcc - 8.38, 8.46, 8.78
gcc - 3.82, 3.82, 3.81
icc - 5.62, 4.57, 4.80
wcc - 4.01, 4.01, 4.05
pbcc - 3.25, 3.28, 3.22
pgcc - 3.42, 3.44, 3.41
picc - 3.28, 3.26, 3.30
pwcc - 3.25, 3.26, 3.25
summary - Borland has the worst library, gcc has the best. pdpclib,
as usual, beats the lot. The compilers are basically equal,
except that gcc is slightly worse, as it doesn't generate an
inline memcpy() for the situation I am using it in. The main
reason for gcc having the best library is that it has a default
buffer size of 5120 compared to the others at 4096.
