No, I suspect it would be very unstable if you tried to bias it
into the linear range.

That's typical for the 741 and a lot of others. Much higher and
you'd have correspondingly more trouble stabilizing the amp.

One of my books has a table comparing some common types, and the
minimum gain figure for most is around 15 to 20 V/mV.
