I can't see what you're refering to. My NS book shows the
"balance/strobe" terminal (pin 6) connecting to the emitters of
two transistors near the input.

Nope. Positive DC feedback in any degree will cause a separation
between the positive-going and negative-going trigger levels.
OTOH capacitively coupled positive feedback has a different
effect, and usually causes oscillation. One common form of
oscillator uses positive AC and negative DC feedback.
