Don't back your birthfather into any corners!
Drive past the house, yes; but do not intrude.  Indeed, it would be better
if he didn't know anyone was searching, for a bit.  
Think about it: what would you two say: "I'm looking for the guy who 
impregnated my mother, but who doesn't know it.  Are you the one?"
You're right: the idea of you must be revealed gradually.  
I think I like the idea of talking with the clergy.
