For NW 3.12, You can use the predefined symbols "%OS" and "%OS_VERSION" in 
your login scripts:
IF "%OS" = "MSDOS" THEN #VC_DOS.BAT
IF "%OS" = "WIN95" THEN #VC_W95.BAT
And so forth.

This is well documented in the manuals with regard to login scripts.
