Does anyone have any information on UP's plans to run coal trains from
southern Illinois over the former Chicago & Northwestern trackage,
Chicago-Harvard IL, now shared with Metra commuter rail? Buzz at the hobby
shop is that UP wants to do this, but Metra is fighting the idea. I live near
this line, and UP has been doing considerable trackwork...24-car ballast
train shuttling back and forth almost daily, lots of work trains with
self-propelled cranes, grade crossing upgrades (one at Bryn Mawr ave.), etc.
Upgrading for 10,000 tonners?
I remember a Wisconsin Electric unit train that came in over the
Illinois Central and then went to the Chicago & Northwestern en route to WEPX
up north when I lived on the south side next to ICRR main line in the
'70s...perhaps this would be a continuation/rerouting/reinstatement of this
service?
