"Efficiency" is not a term one normally applies to any system
running X Windows
Linux's general deficiency in terms of streaming audio/video - due to
various kernel issues can be a killer too. There is renegade work being
done to address this, but its not been generally accepted yet and the
patches to implement it are extensive (~60K LOC and growing every day).
As I understand it, the "fix" approach is to spin kernel threads
to run interrupt contexts, so other interrupts can come in when someone is
tardy in servicing their interrupts. I gather the IDE driver for one
example has some huge issues with interrupt response time and keeping
interrupts disabled for extended periods under curtain situations.
