I have seen monitors in a high definition mode where the individual pixels disappeared on the screen when you checked it with a magnifying glass. That was why you had to go to 19-inch or bigger to get good definition. OTOH several years ago I saw a 12 inch monochrome VGA monitor where the definition was MUCH better than the best 21-inch colour one.
