Well, I guess it doesn't matter, as I returned that particular scanner and am 
now trying a couple of others.  The ones I've disassembled all appear to have 
easily accessable backlights, so I should have no trouble replacing them or 
wiring in a switch, so I guess it doesn't matter.
Given my experience with modern electronics, hearing that a 10 year old top 
of the line model is still working doesn't give me any confidence that a 1 
year old bargain model is going to hold up.  I'm still driving my '73 
Oldsmobile.  My friend's '94 truck is up on blocks.  :-)
