When I was homeschooling (graduated this May after 12 years) I used to ask
my parents that kind of question all the time... and usually the answer I
got was not that we would necessarily retain all the data we learned, but
that "school was a place to learn how to learn." I think that was the phrase
usually used, and it makes sense, especially now that I'm in college. I don't
think I could give you all the dates from my history timeline, but I still
know the methods that I had to use to memorize them when I did.
