I'm not sure what you mean by "the shape of Amsterdam". I am guessing that you mean "founded by the Dutch". RL> celebrated in a little more than 20 years, even had a name "New RL> Amsterdam" first. Could you give a bit more information abot the RL> history of New York? I know, its difficult to tell a history of a Peter Minuit "bought" Manhattan Island from the natives. What isn't as well know is that those natives did not have a claim at all to to the Island! To an extent, the Dutch were swindled, not those natives. If you look at the river running straight south into New York City (usually abreviated as NYC), you will note that it is the Hudson River. It was named after Henry Hudson, an explorer for the Dutch. If you have a good map, check out the names of the cities that lie along that valley. And, at Albany, follow the river that flows into the Hudson River from the west. That one is the Mohawk.
