subject: Re: OT Military...Swearing in

Ouch...I messed trying to reply to this earlier. Ok...after going through
embarrasing things like being naked and having someone poke their finger
where I'd rather not have them do that as an 18 year old Army volunteer
after being told to "bend over and spread them!"...I moved on.
After a 2-3 minute interview by a supposed "Psychiatric
Interviewer" I moved along through the process. After passing through
the induction mill and being allowed to put my clothes back on I raised my
right hand and swore my allegiance to the Constitution of the United States
of America and all that it stood for. This included the Bill of Rights. Why
was this important to me even to this day?
Please let me explain a bit more...the Pledge of Allegiance was born as the
result of a Cracker Jack contest during a time when people in the Nazi
regime were swearing their oaths to a personal leader they called "Der
Fuerher" instead of a set of principles as written in the Constitution
of these United States of America. American children from that day forward
swore allegince to our flag.
During the McArthy era of the early 1950's the Flag Pledge was ammended to
add the words "under God" to what had previously been "One
Nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all". This was a
deliberate insertion in order to differentiate our difference between the
USA as a God fearing (and led) nation as opposed to the "Godless Evil
Empire" of the USSR. We have many people in this great nation that
might not believe in a UNIVERSAL GOD of their definition but believe in the
nation and the concepts in which we live and might even be bettter citizens
than the ones who echo the words they hear in narrow minded gatherings and
esp on Fox News!

majority of service men and women never fire a shot outside of basic
training or a firing range. In fact, there are more opportunities to save
lives or make living conditions more habitable than to take them. Yes, even
in an all out war situation.

recently hit upon the idea of the military, was wondering if people could
offer input, horror stories, advice, warnings, etc. Anything would be
appreciated.
