Thought I would toss out the little bit I know of them. I've only tried it
once and wasnt very good (got a funny shaped taper).
The idea of making tapers, is to use a special wick, preferrably one made for
tapers, but any standard wicks will do. Just dont try regular 'string' if
you intend to actually use them.
You need a drying rack. This need not be anything fancy, but you do want a
plastic sheet under it. Now cut a lenght of wick, about 2 times as long as
the candle you want, plus 5 inches. Center this by folding in half then dip
both halves in the melted wax. Remove from wax and let it get completely
firm. (hang it over the rack in the middle 5 inches of wick so each side can
firm up).
Repeat until it is the right thickness.
Tip: the wax needs to be melted, but no hotter than absolutely needed to
keep it so. Dont leave the taper in the wax more time than it takes to coat
it (dip fast and remove).
Drying rack: I used a 1X2 wood piece over the backs of 2 chairs with a
garbage bag under it. I tied the wood to the chairs loosely but you could
use masking tape just as well.
