Hogwash Jane. So why have allergies to pollen increased out of all
proportion for the last three or so decades? Because the pollen
are there (as they have always been)? I'll tell you why......

Nothing to do with allergies Jane.

...to get back to my original explanation about allergies, an allergy
is an overreaction of the immune system to a particular protein (which
does not explain why..i.e. the cause of the overeaction..the immune
system starts to overreact). It is thus a SYMPTOM of a bewildered
immune system to put it simply. Our bodies have been programmed for
multimillions of years to recognise certain natural proteins as
food (the essential amino acids) and any other common natural
proteins which are not required as foreign bodies (these are marked
with antibodies produced over the years for these natural but unwanted
proteins alone so they can be excreted or eliminated). With the
advent of airplanes, as well as the production of foreign proteins
as foodstuffs and the more rapid cross-breeding of plants (not
to mention genetic engineering of plants) we are being subjected
to a growing number of foreign proteins (both from foreign produce
as well as artificial or cross-bred produce) in a relatively short
space of time. The problem is that some of these unwanted proteins
are so similar to those which are needed that the body accepts them
at first..only to realise later that they are useless. The body
thus develops an antibody against them WHICH CAN ALSO FIT LIKE A
JIGSAW PUZZLE INTO SOME NORMALLY ACCEPTED PROTEIN (like in pollen or
even a tomato etc.).
I've tried to keep it simple so that all can appreciate the
basic mechanisms. Whether you appreciate them is up to you.
