More lessons learned:

Install gconf-editor (while root in that command interpreter session) this way:
 > yum install gconf-editor

Then run gconf-editor while still logged in as root. Then drill down on the
left hand tree to:

    desktop | gnome | applications | browser

There you will see exec. My value there is firefox.

My question: How does the system know which firefox binary to run? Either
somewhere else firefox is mapped to a path or the main pain has the firefox
directory on it?
