It's safe, social-yet-isolated, and multitasking-friendly. You can get a text
when you're out and about and read/respond when you get a chance. When you're
on the phone, you're tied up for the period of time you're on the phone, and
you tie up the person on the other end for an equal amount of time.

It's akin to friending people on Facebook and socializing online instead of
going out to a bar/nightclub/concert with people IRL. It feels social, but at
the end of the night you're at home, alone.    :)
