Sad, 37.Rxd4? is a loser. 37.Qd8! (a move first posted here by Rolf
without a continuation, I believe) still loses in my analysis, but
it's not easy. From my article: "A) 37. Qd8! Qxc2+ 38. Kh3 Be3! 39.
Qd5 Qg6 40. e6. Here both 40. ... Re7?! and 40. ... Rg7 appear to give
Black winning chances. 40. ... Re7 is a crazy line that leads to
liquidation and a superior queen ending that is most likely drawn: 41.
gxf4 c2 42. Rxe3 Rg7!? 43. Rg3 cxd1Q 44. Qxd1 Qxe6+ 45. Kg2 Rxg3+ 46.
hxg3 Qa2+ 47. Kf3 probable draw. (41. Kg2? c2 42. Rc1 Bxc1 43. Rxc1
fxg3 44. hxg3 Rg7 45. Qf3 Rc7 46. Qd5 Rc3 Black is winning.)
40. ... Rg7! looks winning for Black and is THE KEY LINE: 41. Kg2
(what else?) c2 42. Ra1 b3! and Black wins. If 43. Qxb3? it's mate in
seven!"
Not only that, but most of our combined analysis along with huge
amounts of my own on this game was in one of my articles. ("Mig
analyses the complications of Adams - Short game 1" One of my favorite
articles, BTW.) I'm not saying Yaz has to read my stuff, but I think
he should have if he wanted to avoid embarrassment in this case!
(Heheh, maybe he just read my first article on that game ("Mig
analyses Adams-Short in detail" (little did I know at the time how
much detail I'd be getting into later!)) and didn't look further! As
if Yasser is going to be reading me for analysis. Heheh. Of course, I
did see a GM analysis site on the web that had copied my analysis of
that game line for line, including a rather revealing typo!))
>Maybe GMs should pay a bit more attention to us Usenet analysis freaks

It just goes to show that like I mentioned in that article that anyone
can analyze well, it just takes time. Masters + days > GM + minutes! I
haven't seen any of the GM sites mention the fact that Shirov could
have drawn against Polgar at Hoogovens with 20...b4! as I point out in
my Chess Madness article. GM Henley at Smartchess gives 20...Rg8? as
losing and presents no other alternatives. The official tournament
bulletin gives "20... b4 21.Qf7+ Kc6 22.Qxe6 also was hopeless.",
which is wrong. My 22...Kb7! looks like a draw to me. Let's see what
Yaz says about this one next week!
Did you send in these corrections to IC, Jeff? You could at least
email him with the "condensed" version from my article, it certainly
belongs to all of us. If you don't, I will! Or, I have all the
original posts on this saved in a file I used for my article, it
wouldn't be hard to reassemble. That and my original article is still
up at TWIC. After this he may check rgca from now on! I think that
partly GMs are afraid or embarrassed to take analysis from non-GMs.
Our work as presented in my article is no doubt the definitive
analysis of Adams-Short 1, but I don't think you'll be seeing our
names in the Informant. But I'm sure some GM will rip us off when he
gets paid to go over that game.
Still, I can't believe Seirawan ignored all the great stuff in my
39.Qxg3 Bf2!? line, that was a wild ending! It would have been nice to
have a GM go over that crazy Rook vs Bishop ending, but alas. Maybe
you can convince him to take a look at it, Jeff!
saludos, Mig
