Phantom power is DC, and can be anything from 12V to 48V. It is applied as
pins 2+3 of an XLR being positive and the shield being negative. I may have
the polarity reversed though - it's been a LONG LONG time since I worried
about the nuts and bolts of Low-Z mic level design.
It would be odd to actually have phantom get through an adapter, since most
people tie pins 1 and 2 of an XLR together inside the adapter cable, which
shorts the phantom to ground.
