| subject: | Suse, Ubuntu and Knoppix tried |
From: "Antti Kurenniemi" ...and display is the problem: I've got a three years old Dell Dimension desktop, with ATI Radeon X800 display adapter, and none of the three distros I tried would allow me to change the resolution to anything but 640*480, which is of course quite unusable. All started up ok, and all had the desktop configuration in a fairly easily found place, but the resolution drop-down didn't have any other choises to select. Knoppix at least recognized the adapter in the loading process, others I don't know if they did. So any tips as to how I could get drivers for that card? If downloading is needed, it has to be a simple web page because almost none of the dialogs I opened would fit into 640*480, so all the buttons would be pretty much invisible (out of screen) which makes life a bit difficult. And another question: I was almost about to install SUSE 10.1 on this system, but I backed out at the point where it was going to shrink the windows partition. I've got a single HD, with a single partition, and there is a lot of empty space (100+ gigs), but has anyone done that - is it safe? Does Windows (XP) have a problem with that? Or should I just buy a second disk and use that?
