I used the -f (do not fragment) option of Windows XP Ping.
C:\>ping -f -l 1472 news.barkto.com
Pinging w3.nls.net [216.144.1.254] with 1472 bytes of data:
Reply from 216.144.1.254: bytes=1472 time=165ms TTL=114
A wireshark capture shows the total packet length is 1514 bytes - this
includes the Ethernet headers -
1472 - ICMP ping payload
8 bytes ICMP Header
20 IP header
14 Ethernet encapsulation
-------
1514 bytes total packet length on the wire
A bit of poking around shows that MTU is only the IP packet, so this
confirms an MTU of 1500. A 1500 byte MTU packet goes all they way to and
from news.barkto.com.
