The worst part about all this is how liberals in their zeal to end 
"snake pit" type institutions, went overboard, to the point where people 
have to be shown to be a "danger to themselves or to others" (by which 
time, it's usually too late,) before authorities can intervene in cases 
of mental illness.
That's why we end up seeing standoffs with obviously deranged people 
like that guy in New Orleans, who ended up shot and killed.

Conservatives cut funding to mental illness treatment programs, insuring 
that people will continue to flip out.
