It's the seed from a weed and is like a spiked ball with sharp 
protrusions all around.
I didn't know what they were until I moved here either. 

When my dog picks up a few he stands there and waits for me to extract
them from his paw.
You have to pull them straight out quickly or the spines
can break off and hurt too.
