HACK-MAN: Wow. I didn't realize how bad a year this really was until I
had to vote for "Raven vows to win NWA title despite New Church",
"Triple
H places bounty on Goldberg", and "Rock sings, plays guitar, argues with
Hurricane" as the best angles!
PAUL ZOROVICH: There weren't many, but I got a kick out of John Cena and
Spanky doing a rap-off. Special props for getting the ref to act as a
human beatbox.
BIGDADDYLOCO: How can you not love the 'White Boy Challenge'? Well many
of you didn't, but I did!
CRIMEFIGHTER: Man, I can't believe someone actually thinks Al Wilson
marrying Dawn Marie was a BEST angle candidate. YOU IDIOT! The Gillberg
vs. Goldberg angle was something I've longed to see, Spanky vs. Cena was
a show stealer, and Rock putting over Hurricane when HHH won't put over
anyone but himself were the best of the year.
MICHAEL: 2nd: Steve Austin named RAW co-GM, splitting power with Eric
Bischoff. At least we werenąt subjected to only having the one Evil GM.
3rd: Rock brings back Gillberg to dance a jig and humilate Goldberg. It
added heat eat to their match, kept Rock as a heel, and let us see
Gillberg one more time.
YNAE316: On the Raw side, Austin's year-long rivalry with Bischoff was the
best thing they had going. Austin can't go in the ring anymore but his
rivalry with Bischoff was as entertaining as anything else on Raw. The Mr.
America angle was critically blasted but I for one had a blast watching
it. I've always been a fan of those "face gets suspended returns as
masked man" angles (yes, I liked the Midnight Rider). The
Hogan/Zack/Vince segments were the entertainment highlight of Smackdown
for me. Triple H's bounty gimmick on Goldberg was also a solid promo
piece. It allowed Goldberg to smash through tons of guys to help build
him up and it played well to Triple H's character.
SCOTT CHRIST: The whole Flair v. HHH angle on the May 19 Raw was
tremendous, but what really stuck out, for me, was Shawn Michaels giving
Flair a pep talk backstage and Flair crying. It was the sort of real
emotion very few guys can capture anymore, and Flair does it like it's no
big thing. Goldberg's debut on Raw was very well-done. HHH's bounty on
Goldberg was some super fun.
CHRISTOPHER SHEA: Okay, the WWE writing staff takes a lot of flak, most of
it deserved, but they should get some kudos on having the courage to try
to reinvent Kane, who's been in a rut since 1999. Sure, there were
stumbles along the way (trying to make Kane look "hideous" with black
smears on his face), but in the end, they've created a strong new villain
for the show. And I'm still looking forward to the Kane/Taker feud next
year.
AERO: Gotta go with the Al Wilson angle, the man had two penii. Honorable
mention to Kane trying to fry Shane's nads.
RYAN FAULCONER: Chris Hamrick's "knee injury" at the Spirit of 76 show
worked better than any other angle in recent memory at creating an
illusion of reality. Ian Rotten went nuts swearing his head off and that
helped sell the angle. The rap battle between Spanky and John Cena was a
lot of fun and also deserves mention. Spanky showed a glimpse of what he
can do as an "entertainer" and John Cena, well, he pretty much did his one
trick and did it well. Brian Hebner was the unsung hero of that angle as
well.
