Gotta be trend, the ms firewall doesn't block outbound.

How about this, go to www.whatsmyip.org and tell me what your IP is, don't
reboot your modem after that so I can traceroute to you from the server,
maybe I can see something from this end. Oh wait, your IP is in the header,
lets see..

Trace complete.

nope, looks normal to me. But it does show that the traceroute you tried is
being blocked by something at your end. The fact that it's fast with
windows may suggest there is some sort of incompatibility between linux and
your router or the network has an issue. Are you using wires or wireless?
There are lots of possibilities here.

the fact that linux is fast going to other servers may simply mean that
they aren't exposing the same issue, I've tweaked the server (things like
RWIN setting) to make it as fast as possible and it's on a gigE network
where the others may be on 100Mb networks.

Is it linux or the linux news reader you are using? (have you tried another
news reader on linux?)

Geo.
