They can be used in a script to handle Fido pkt's, as well as other known
formats, without a need for adding extra DB packages. Same could be said
for php's {un,}pack functions, but like I previously perl is almost twice

I am not sure I understand the question. I used the exact same routine and
dataset for both. Perl kicked php's butt. What else do you want?

I scripted both perl and php. Faster then commandline. There was no
{front,back}end, such as apache, to get in the way.

I'll do it again soon, along with the simple scripts that make the call to
the functions.
