Are those strange characters all over the messages, or on a specific place?
Is it only with messages from Joe, or also with messages from others on the
Fidonet site? If the latter it is possible IRex is causing this. I can
configure a lot, so it is possible the default settings do some wrong
translations is some cases.

Next weekend I'll try to copy some gated messages to a temp dir just before
they are sent out to the mailinglist to see of IRex needs to be fine-tuned
or not.
