I haven't changed any settings for years but cannot recall ever changing

I have about six accounts, three dead and kept for archive purposes.
Even if I start a reply to an old email from one of those it correctly
sets my defunct address to send from.
Perhaps set up a new separate OE6 database, add a couple of your
accounts and see what happens?
