| subject: | RE: The myth of `perfection` |
> > > What I loathe about Martha is that she thinks she's wonderful. > She thinks she's perfect. Not only that but she's sneering of > everyone on the planet who isn't as perfect as she thinks she is - which, by > the look of it, is everyone. > > > Do you think she really thinks that? > Yes, I do. From the things she says, the body language, the way she says things, the looks she gives people. > Of course not. She projects that persona because she's a walking > commercial for her books, magazine, teevee show, KMartstuff, etc. The persona is toned down for public consumption because the real "Queen of F** Everything" is smart enough to know that she can't have her public adoration if she shows herself as she really is > It's not like she knows all this stuff; she has a staff of 200 people to > research recipes, household hints, gardening tips, etc. for her to pass along > to her public. She doesn't pretend to know all that stuff. She's a lot smarter than that. She knows very well no one could ever know everything about everything. There's no way in the world she could have built an enormous multi-million dollar empire, starting from being a housewife in her kitchen, if she wasn't extra-ordinarily brilliant. You're missing the point. It's her attitude that gets my back up. > Personally, I think she's pretty hot for an old gal nearly as old as I am. All yours. And, actually, in her TV show she spreads the praise to her staff of hundreds You see, *that's* what I think is the false image. She's learned if she wants to maintain favour with the public she has to show appreciation to the little people. She didn't used to. She learned she had to. There's nothing genuine in the tone of voice, facial expression, or look in her eye. She has to make it look good for the camera, but there's no doubt they're her minions and she doesn't consider them equal with her. (though I still get the malicious giggles when a guest chef (or child) starts flinging flour in "her" kitchen -- it's just the Oscar Madison in me TWEAKING the Felix Ungers of the world....) Yeah. I love seeing her cringe when she can't control someone completely. I have empathy for people who are perfectionist and obsessive/compulsive when they recognize that they're just like the rest of us doing the best we can. I have none with the ones like her who take it to extremes consider the rest of us lesser beings =shrug= She do rub a lot of folks (especially Westerners) the wrong way -- though I think it could be a cultural thing. Partly. With me it's being raised by someone who was considered a marvel and a war hero and brilliant and caring by the rest of the world, her adoring public, and was a vicious bully in private. I can see that same cold eyed calculation in Martha. It's the eyes that are the give-away. She calulcates every move, every flick of an eyelash for what looks good in public. You can bet your bottom dollar she's a totally different person in private. That false gaiety and false praise vanishes the moment there are no witnesses, you can bet your life on that. People who are "My Maaaaaaaaaahhhhvelous Assistants" in front of the camera will be "YOU STUPID IDIOT!" the moment there's no one else there. Sooner or later scandals will break open. It's only a matter of time. otoh, don't have a case of Martha envy or feel I need to keep up with her, so maybe I'm not a good judge, tygress I have no envy of her, I have no desire or inclination to be like her or do the things she advocates. I do not want a frou frou house full of "Wooooonnnnnnerrfuilllll" bits of this and that. It isn't based on that kind of thing, it's based on my (as George Carlin puts it) B**Sh** detector. The over stating, the constant use of superlative words when applied to herself or things she does is the first indication that all is not as it seems. Then the look in those unfeeling, calculating eyes is the tip off. Then the falseness of the tone of voice and body language whenever she says anything positive to or about anyone other than herself, and the warmth with which she praises herself, and the hackles are up. Nothing I've seen since the first "what the?" has indicated I'm wrong. I don't believe her innocence in this insider trading charge for a split second. No one as brilliant as she is, as controlling as she is, or as financially savvy as she is, could have made a careless move in something like that. It wasn't a moment of inattention or not knowing what she was doing. Someone with that sense of self-importance, can, however, think that the little people will never be smart enough to catch her out. As much as I'd like to see the people behind the fraud at Enron go down for what they did, I'd like to see Martha go down - for a lesser version of the same thing. White collar crime.
