Your answer is both wrong and profoundly stupid.  You don't let someone
out on a 48 hour furlough for the purpose of locking up a violent
criminal for FORTY-EIGHT HOURS and then RELEASING THEM when the
furloughed prisoner returns!

And your arrogant little "duh" at the end just made your answer all the

Furloughs are to help a prisoner ease back into outside life, as their
release date approaches.  It is for rehabilitation.  When a prisoner is
supposed to be serving life without parole, that rationale isn't really
valid.  Neither the federal system nor any other state gave furloughs to
those doing life without parole.  Mass. tried to follow suit in 1976,
but Dukakis vetoed the bill.  He finally gave in to the change in 1988,
but too late to help Fournier.
