Hello Daryl,

>LL>Seems like global warming is getting the best of your system. :)

DS>Only when the air conditioning is not working in the apartment.

>LL>Would you rather have tornadoes?

DS>Compared to earthquakes, I would...although we've had both in Arkansas.

Earthquakes are rare in Louisiana. But they do happen.

DS>The quakes have been relatively minor by comparison, but we've had several
DS>significant tornadoes over the years. The reason I pick tornadoes is that
DS>you have to have a severe thunderstorm FIRST...you can NOT have a tornado
DS>out of a clear blue sky...unless you're talking about their "dust devil
DS>cousins". With an earthquake, your only warning is when the ground starts
DS>shaking.

Waterspouts are a problem when fishing. But like tornadoes, a severe
thunderstorm has to be there first.

>LL>You do realize what causes tornadoes. Driving on the right side
>LL>of the road. When two cars pass each other, one from the north,
>LL>the other from the south, each driver driving on their right side,
>LL>a mini-tornado is formed. The mini-tornado then strengthens and
>LL>becomes a big tornado. And then the massive destruction begins.

DS>Not bad sarcasm, but the truth is that tornadoes are caused by wind
DS>shear...winds entering the thunderstorm coming from different directions
DS>at different heights. The perfect example is southeast winds at the
DS>surface, southwest winds at 5000 feet, and west winds at 10000 feet.

A caller to WWL Radio in New Orleans had the theory about how tornadoes
are created. It was a crazy rant, but he had it all worked out. In a
strange and bizarre way, it all made sense. The radio station even got
the meteorologist from WWL-TV on the air, in a vain effort to refute
his wild claims.

[snipped for brevity, but appreciate the info]

DS>I personally have been under two funnel clouds, and within a mile of
DS>another one...and don't really care to experience this again. I can't
DS>even watch severe weather videos anymore, due to having nightmares.

I have been out fishing when a waterspout came very close to the boat.
Very scary. Also been driving through a severe thunderstorm, when what
sounded and and felt like a freight train roaring overhead came to life.
Had to have been a tornado.

DS>And, that's our Meterology 101 weather lecture for today.

The fellow who called the radio station was dubbed The Tornado Guy
after his rant. :)

>LL>Being from Louisiana, I am more concerned about hurricanes rather
>LL>than tornadoes. Especially since 2005, when we were hit by three
>LL>hurricanes - Hurricane Cindy, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Rita.
>LL>This year the same conditions as in 2005 are present. And I just
>LL>can't wait for the next Big One to come this way...

DS>Hurricanes DO spawn tornadoes, although they are typically
"weaker" than
DS>the ones you see in "Tornado Alley". The counterclockwise
circulation of
DS>the "eye" of the storm interacting with the land masses, cause the
DS>thunderstorms in the eye wall surrounding the center of the hurricane to
DS>rotate faster than usual, and tornadoes are the result. I discovered that
DS>in a term paper I did in college almost 30 years ago. That one, and a paper
DS>I did on acronymns were the ONLY two research projects that I enjoyed doing.
DS>With everything else, I took the view of the little boy who said
"Why should
DS>I study about the American Revolution? I know who won".

My favorite part of the local news is the weather. Some weathermen
are true actors, and can be very entertaining. One weatherman dressed
up like a chicken for his weathercast. CNN must have seen it, because
he later signed on with them.

>LL>The Accidental View - events happen by accident rather than by
>LL>design. The Conspiratorial View - events happen by design, or
>LL>unknown reasons.

DS>As the old song "Turn, Turn, Turn" says..."there is a
time for everything
DS>under Heaven"..taken directly from the Biblical book of Ecclesiates. I
DS>believe that everything happens by the direct or permissive Will of
DS>Almighty God...no matter if it's weather related, who is in power of a
DS>country, or other circumstance. In the end, God's Will is going to be
DS>done...and that includes the yet unfulfilled Bible Prophecy events, such
DS>as the Rapture of The Church, The Great Tribulation, and The Second Coming
DS>Of Jesus Christ to Earth, among other things.

We may not fully understand God's plan. Perhaps we understand only
bits and pieces. But whatever His plan, it will come to pass. In
His time, not our time. Even though we have free will, we cannot
change God's plan, given that God's plan is a divine plan.
