Totally agree. I don't mind them constructing barriers to
protect their property, provided it doesn't get in the way
of the consumer. The computer software industry tried the
copy-protection schemes, but they were a royal pain to
make work all the time and restore from computer failures.
DAT also faces the copy-protection scheme issues. I'm
on the Medeski Martin & Wood list on the internet, which
devotes alot of time setting up tape sharing trees because
MMW promotes audience taping of their concerts. And of
course a big issue to the trees is if you can defeat the
SCMS (isn't that it?) DAT copy scheme since many people
receive 3 or 4th or nth generation copies.
BG> The "media on demand" to be to be a viable option for most by the end

And I can't wait! We've already got a high speed link
at work, which makes coming home to 28.8 rather hard.
Some of the software technology for purchasing over the
internet will be more secure than ANYTHING we have today.
Besides the anti-hacker thing, they'l have things in
place so that the retailer knows just enough to validate
the transaction, no account specifics for their clerk to
run off with.
