There may have been more to it than that. I was quoting from Land of the
Midnight Sun, a reputable text, but I was told about this shortly after I
first arrived here in 1989.

In 1898 there were 30,000 people in Dawson. I don't know if you've been
there but I have difficulty in visualizing 30,000 souls in a place which
now holds 1200. It must have resembled a rabbit warren. :-(
