Greg Kurth was thrown for a loss after he said:
EG>> George. Most of the players that the Raiders got were guys who were
 EG>> unwanted their old teams.
GK> Exactly! Unwanted because they were thought to be washed up, or
 GK> uncontrolable......malcontents.
Hardly. You mentioned 4 players and one of them was always a Raider. Matuzak
and Hendricks weren't considered washed up, they were both caught up in the
politics of the WFL. Alzado would have been considered the closest to *washed
up* in the group of 4 that you mentioned and much of that came from the spin
doctors at Cleveland. Now, you'd be right about Plunkett because he was
considered washed up.
Todd Christensen wasn't a malcontent with Dallas or New York, he just wanted
to play RB and it was only in Oakland that he accepted the fact that his
future in the NFL was at TE. A number of Raiders found themselves playing
different positions, even different sides of the line after they got to
Oakland. Most of the guys that they got were NEVER deemed "uncontrolable" and
quite a few were languishing on other teams' benches. The Raiders were the
NFL's early version of Plan B - giving guys a chance to play after years of
sitting behind another player. When teams didn't specialize, there were guys
that languished on benches for years, despite being as talented as the *star*
that was playing ahead of them.
