Many pet owners hate the thought...but sooner or later...for health or other reasons, they find that they have to have their pet "put to sleep". This is usually done when all other options have been considered in trying to take care of the pet...for in humanely euthanizing it, it's as if you're losing a member of your family. Sadly, this is to be done with our weenie dog, Fritz. He became diabetic a little over a year ago, and developed cataracts, glaucoma, insulin resistance, and apparent loss of excretory functions. Our vet is stumped, and he said that "when it not only becomes an issue of the animal suffering, and the burden to its owners, it's better that the animal be put down". We will miss our little weenie widget...but after a time of mourning and recovery...approximately 90 days or so...my wife and I plan to look for a new weenie dog. We have several pictures of Fritz and a lot of good memories. Death is part of the life cycle for all creatures, and we just have to pick up the pieces, and go on. I've lost animals in the past, but I really became attached to Fritz...and my wife razzed me that "I married her for the dog" . Seriously, for those who have had to have their pets put down, any words of support, etc. would be appreciated...plus, it's a good topic for this echo.
